World Cup : Aus vs Zim ,Zimbabwe Outplay Australia in Colombo to Seal Memorable World Cup Upset

In a tournament that had followed a predictable pattern in its opening week, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup suddenly came alive on Friday at the R. Premadasa Stadium. Under humid Colombo skies, Zimbabwe delivered a disciplined and confident performance to defeat Australia by 23 runs. It was one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far.
This was not a lucky win. Zimbabwe clearly outplayed Australia in all departments—batting, bowling, and fielding. Australia, the 2021 champions, were missing their regular captain Mitchell Marsh, who was ruled out due to a groin injury. In his absence, Travis Head led the side. Even without Marsh, Australia still had a strong lineup filled with experienced , However, Zimbabwe handled the conditions much better and played with belief from the very beginning.

Before the match even began, Australia faced uncertainty. Mitchell Marsh was ruled out for the second straight game after picking up an injury in training. Travis Head stepped in as captain and won the toss. Backing his team’s chasing strength, Head chose to bowl first. At the time, it looked like a sensible decision. But as the game progressed, it became clear that Zimbabwe had read the pitch perfectly.

Zimbabwe Smart Batting Effort

Zimbabwe’ openers, Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani, started confidently. The pitch offered some help to spinners, but there was good bounce for fast bowlers.Marumani played aggressively in the early overs. He struck boundaries through the covers and used his feet well to counter swing. His quick 35 runs from 21 balls gave Zimbabwe early momentum. When he was dismissed by Marcus Stoinis in the eighth over, Zimbabwe had already scored 61 runs. The strong start laid the foundation for a competitive total.

The highlight of the innings was Brian Bennett unbeaten 64. He played with calmness and maturity. Instead of taking unnecessary risks, he placed the ball into gaps and rotated the strike efficiently. He built an important 70 run partnership with Ryan Burl, who contributed 35 runs. Together, they kept Australia under pressure.

Australia bowling looked ordinary on the day. Even experienced spinner Adam Zampa struggled to control the flow of runs. Zimbabwe batters seemed comfortable against his variations. Although Cameron Green managed to break the partnership, Zimbabwe were already in a strong position.

In the final overs, captain Sikandar Raza added the finishing touches. His quick 25 not out gave Zimbabwe the late push they needed. The team finished at 169 for 2 in 20 overs, which looked slightly above par on a slow surface.

Muzarabani  Match-Winning Spell

Chasing 170, Australia needed a steady start. Instead, they faced early disaster. Fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani produced a brilliant opening spell that changed the match completely.

He first dismissed Josh Inglis, who edged a ball that moved away. Soon after, Tim David was surprised by extra bounce and was caught. The pressure mounted quickly. From the other end, Brad Evans removed  Cameron Green for a duck.

The biggest moment came when Evans bowled Travis Head . Australia were reduced to 29 for 4 within five overs. The crowd sensed history as Zimbabwe dominated the powerplay.

Australia Fightback Falls Short

With the top order gone, the responsibility fell on Matt Renshaw and Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell tried to counterattack. He hit 31 runs and played some aggressive shots to reduce the pressure. For a brief moment, it seemed he could turn the game around.

However, Zimbabwe  fielding was outstanding. They saved crucial runs and maintained tight pressure. Maxwell was eventually bowled by Ryan Burl at a key stage of the match, ending Australia hopes of a comeback.

Renshaw continued to fight alone. He scored a brave 65 and tried to keep the scoreboard moving. He played some impressive shots and showed determination. But without support from the other end, the required run rate kept rising. It went from 10 runs per over to 17, and eventually became too high to chase.
