Women’s World Cup, South Africa thrash Sri Lanka by 10 wickets , full match report

In  Women’s World Cup 2025  saw another commanding performance form South Africa women ,who secured thumping 10 wickets win over Sri Lanka in rain hit encounter in Colombo, their fourth consecutive win in world cup , displayed complete dominance with both bat and bowl , comfortably Chase down a revised target to strengthen their semifinal hopes, while Sri Lanka campaign continued to crumble under mounting pressure , yet to find first win in this tournament.

Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and chose to bat first on a pitch that initially looked promising for batting. The innings began with confidence as Vishmi Gunaratne and Athapaththu put on a quick 21 runs inside the first five overs. Unfortunately, the momentum was halted when Gunaratne retired hurt after twisting her knee attempting a quick single. That early setback disrupted Sri Lanka’s rhythm, and soon after, Athapaththu fell for just 11 runs.

The Proteas bowlers maintained tight lines throughout the innings, Hasini Parera added only 4 .Rain interrupted play during the 12 over, and after a lengthy delay, the match was reduced to 20 overs per side under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. When the game resumed Harshita Samarawickrama(13) tried  to build partnerships with Kavisha Dilhari but Nadine De Klerk break 26 runs stand dismissed kavisha Dilhari on 14 and Nilakshi De Silva steady 18 off 20 balls while Vishmi Gunarathne played fighting knock 34 off 33 balls after comeback from retired hut.

Sri Lanka managed only 105/7 in 20 overs.

South Africa bowling Nonkululeko Mlaba is pick of the bowler took 3/30 in 4 overs , while Masabata klaas got 2 wickets and Nadine De Klerk baged 1 wicket.

With the DLS adjustment, South Africa’s target was set at 121 runs in 20 overs. The Proteas’ openers, Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits, began the chase with remarkable authority and patience. They rotated the strike efficiently and punished loose deliveries to keep the scoreboard ticking at a brisk pace. Wolvaardt, in particular, looked in sublime touch, finding gaps with ease and timing her strokes beautifully through cover and midwicket.

The pair brought up the fifty partnership in just 7.1 overs, leaving Sri Lanka’s bowlers searching for answers. None of the Sri Lankan spinners could trouble the batters, as the wet ball and dew made control difficult.  Laura Wolvaardt  60 off 47 balls. At the other end, Tazmin Brits played the perfect supporting role, remaining unbeaten on 55 off 42  deliveries.

South Africa sealed victory in style, reaching 125/0 in just 14.5 overs, completing a 10-wicket win . The emphatic win pushed South Africa closer to the semi-finals.
