Biratnagar Kings continued their strong start in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) as they secured a comfortable five-wicket win over Kathmandu Gorkhas at the TU International Cricket Stadium. This victory marked their second straight triumph of the tournament and highlighted their well-balanced performance with both bat and bowl while Kathmandu Gorkhas again reflect their batting inconsistency and unable to put competitive total .
Kathmandu Gorkhas were put in to bat first, but their innings got off to a disastrous start. The Biratnagar bowlers were sharp from the very beginning, with fast bowler Marchant de Lange leading the attack. His pace and accuracy made scoring difficult, and the Gorkhas top-order failed to settle.
Within the first 5 overs, the Gorkhas slipped to 13/3 losing wickets in quick succession. Their batters struggled to rotate the strike, and the pressure kept building. De Lange was outstanding, finishing with figures of 2 for 17, which played a big role in breaking the Gorkhas early momentum.
However, the innings took a positive turn in the second half. Mohammad Aadil Alam produced an excellent counter-attacking knock, scoring 48 off 25 balls. His innings included clean hitting—four boundaries and two sixes and shifted some momentum back to his side. He was supported well by Ben Charlesworth (32) and Santosh Yadav (26). Kathmandu Gorkhas managed 134/6 in 20 overs.
For the Kings, spinners Sandeep Lamichhane, Shubham Ranjane, and Surya Tamang picked up a wicket each.
Chasing 135, Biratnagar Kings were never under pressure. Their top-order came out with an attacking mindset, and they dominated right from the first over. The partnership between George Munsey and Martin Guptill laid the perfect foundation.
Munsey played a blazing innings, smashing 36 off just 16 balls. With five fours and two massive sixes, he immediately put the Gorkhas bowlers on the back foot. Even after losing early opener Lokesh Bam (14), the Kings never slowed down. Munsey and Guptill added quick runs and pushed the team to a strong position before the halfway mark of the innings.
Guptill played sensibly, scoring 25 off 19 balls, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries. Their aggressive partnership meant the required run rate dropped comfortably.
After the double blow, Basir Ahamad (19) and Naren Bhatta (24) steadied the chase. They batted calmly, kept the scoreboard moving, Their partnership ensured victory for kings, reached the target 135/5 with 17 ball spare.
Fo the Kathmandu Gorkhas Shahab Alam was stand out bowler took 2/19 in 4 overs while Karan kc, Gerhard Erasmus, Santosh Yadav chipped with 1 wicket each.
