India Stay in Semi-Final Race with Big Win in Chennai

In a high-pressure Super 8 match at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India produced a dominant performance to defeat Zimbabwe by 72 runs. With their campaign on the line, the Men in Blue responded in the best possible way. They didn’t just win , they made a strong statement by scoring 256/4, the highest total of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup so far.

After winning the toss, Zimbabwe chose to bowl first. India made a surprising change by promoting Sanju Samson to open the innings with Abhishek Sharma. India’s opening partnerships had been disappointing throughout the tournament, failing to cross 25 runs in the previous five matches. But this new move worked perfectly.

Samson showed attacking intent right away, smashing the second ball of the match for a huge six. He played freely and scored 24 runs from just 15 balls before getting out at deep square leg. Although his stay was short, he gave India the fast start they desperately needed.

Abhishek Sharma, who had struggled badly in recent matches with only 15 runs in his last four innings, finally returned to form. He looked confident from the beginning and played with positive intent. He reached his maiden T20 World Cup half-century in just 26 balls. Abhishek scored 55 off 30 deliveries, hitting five massive sixes and putting Zimbabwe bowlers under pressure.

After the powerplay, Zimbabwe tried to slow the game down by bringing in their spinners. However, Ishan Kishan and captain Suryakumar Yadav ensured that the momentum did not drop. Kishan played a smart innings of 38 runs, rotating strike and finding boundaries regularly.

Suryakumar Yadav, known for his innovative stroke play, entertained the crowd with his trademark shots. His quick 33 run knock off just 13 deliveries included creative scoops and reverse hits that kept the scoreboard moving. Even though neither batter scored a big fifty, they made sure India maintained a run rate of over ten runs per over.

The real damage came in the final overs. Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma took complete control of the game in the death overs. The pair added 84 runs in just 31 balls in an unbeaten partnership that completely crushed Zimbabwe’s hopes.

Pandya was in destructive form. He reached his half-century in only 23 balls and attacked almost every bowler he faced. His powerful hitting cleared the boundary with ease. Tilak Varma supported him brilliantly, scoring an unbeaten 44 off just 16 balls. He played fearless cricket and punished anything short or wide.

The final over, bowled by Brad Evans, went for 21 runs, pushing India total to a massive 256/4. Zimbabwe bowlers had a very difficult evening. Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani both conceded more than ten runs per over and struggled to control the Indian batters.

Chasing 257 was always going to be extremely tough. However, Zimbabwe started positively and reached the end of the powerplay without losing a wicket. Brian Bennett was the standout performer for Zimbabwe and played a remarkable innings.

Bennett showed confidence and skill, mixing classic cricket shots with modern attacking strokes. He especially targeted Shivam Dube, scoring 26 runs in a single over against him. Bennett reached his half-century in 35 balls and continued attacking despite wickets falling at the other end.

He finished unbeaten on 97 off 59 balls ,a brilliant effort under pressure. It was the highest individual score against India in T20 World Cup history. Unfortunately for Zimbabwe, none of his teammates could provide strong support. The required run rate kept increasing, and the pressure became too much.

While India’s batters set up the victory, the bowlers ensured there was no comeback. Arshdeep Singh delivered an outstanding performance with the ball. The left-arm pacer used the humid Chennai conditions smartly and bowled accurate yorkers during the death overs.

One of the key moments came when he dismissed Tony Munyonga with a perfect yorker that crashed into the middle stump. That wicket ended Zimbabwe hopes of a miracle chase.

Arshdeep finished with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 24 runs in his four overs. He maintained control even when Bennett was attacking at the other end.

In the end, Zimbabwe managed 184/6 in their 20 overs, falling well short of the target.
