ICC Women’s World Cup: England-w thrash South Africa-w by 10 wickets

The ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 witnessed a one-sided encounter in Guwahati as Linsey Smith stun  South Africa with match winning spell, England Women stormed to a massive 10-wicket victory over South Africa marking a dream start to their campaign.

After losing the toss South Africa bat first , backfired heavily as their batting order crumbled against a ruthless English bowling unit. None of the Proteas’ top-order batters managed to hold their ground, with captain Laura Wolvaardt (5) falling cheaply to Linsey Smith, setting the tone for the collapse.

The middle order fared no better as Marizanne Kapp (4) and Tazmin Brits (5) departed. Apart from Sinalo Jafta (22), who fought hard with some resistance, every other batter was dismissed in single digits. South Africa eventually folded for just 69 runs in 20.4 overs, their third-lowest total in Women’s ODI history.

England bowlers were on point from start to finish. Linsey Smith (3/7) on world cup debut delivered a sensational spell, supported by Nat Sciver-Brunt (2/5) and spinners Sophie Ecclestone (2/21) and Charlie Dean (2/16). while Lauren Bell 1/24.

Chasing a modest 70 was never going to trouble a seasoned England batting line-up. Openers Tammy Beaumont (21)* and Amy Jones (40)* looked composed, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries.

The duo ensured England didn’t lose any wickets, cruising to the target in just 14.1 overs. Their unbeaten partnership not only wrapped up the game but also gave the team a significant net run rate boost, a crucial factor in World Cup group stages. With this, England registered their first 10-wicket win over South Africa in Women’s ODIs, stamping authority early in the tournament.
