Women’s World Cup: England crush Sri Lanka by 89 runs to extend winning streak

England women continued their dominant march in the ICC Women’s world Cup 2025 with a comprehensive 89 runs victory over Sri Lanka at Colombo. A magnificent century by Nat Sciver Brunt and a lethal spell by sophie Ecclestone, England extended their unbeaten streak to three matches, while Sri Lanka struggled to match their intensity under pressure.

After losing the toss sent in to bat first, England faced early trouble when opener Amy Jones was run out for 11 .her dismissal brought some nerves into the camp but Tammy Beaumont counterattacked smartly, playing knock of 32 off 29 balls. Leaving England 49/2 .

Heather Knight and Nat Sciver Brunt the pair steadied the Innings with a composed 60 run stand for the third wicket, knight 29 off 47 balls provided much needed momentum,she was dismissed by Inoka Ranaweera. While Sophie Dunkley managed only 18 , Ema lamb added only 13 and Alice Capsey departed without scoring .

England were reeling at 168/6 but Nat Sciver Brunt held her nerve showcasing her trademark clam under pressure, she paced her innings perfectly, rotating strike,she reached in three figures,and become most hundred in women’s World Cup   played 117 off 117 with the help of 9 fours and two sixes . While Charlotte Dean add 19 valuable runs , Sophie Ecclestone 3 , Linsey Smith 5* and Lauren Bell 1*. England 253/9 in 50 overs.

Sri Lanka bowling Inoka Ranaweera pickup the bowler gets 3/33 in 10 overs while Udeshika prabodani, Sugandika Kumari  takes 2 wicket each and Kavisha Dilhari bagged 1 wicket.

Chasing 254 , Sri Lanka made a steady Start opener Hasini Parera fought hard but fell on 35 off 60 balls , while Vishmi Gunarathne added only 10. Harshita Samarawickrama playing confidently through the covers she scored 33 runs off 44 balls but once Sophie Ecclestone was introduced into attack the momentum shifted dramatically.

She dismissed Chamari Athapaththu on 15 while Kavisha Dilhari added only 4 , Nilakshi De Silva tried some resistance but fell on 24 while Anushka Sanjeewani 10 , lower order not as much, Sri Lanka lose on regular intervals wickets and bowled out on 164 , suffered loss by 89 runs.

England bowling, Sophie Ecclestone is the stand out bowler for England gets 4/17 in 10 overs , while Charlotte Dean,Nat Sciver Brunt takes 2 wickets each and Linsey Smith, Alice Capsey bagged 1 wicket each.
