India dominated proceedings on Day 1 of the 2nd Test against West Indies as opener Yashasvi Jaiswal produced a magnificent unbeaten 173 off 253 balls, guiding the visitors to a commanding 318 for 2 at stumps. The day completely belonged to India’s batting unit, led by Jaiswal’s exceptional patience and stroke play, alongside strong support from Sai Sudharsan and KL Rahul. After opting to bat first, India’s top order ensured a solid foundation.
From the very beginning, Jaiswal looked composed and confident. His innings was a perfect blend of aggression and maturity as he struck 22 boundaries and batted with a calm temperament. Partnering with him initially was KL Rahul, who played a fluent knock of 38 runs off 54 balls, hitting five fours and one six before getting out to Jomel Warrican. Rahul’s dismissal came against the run of play when he was stumped by Tevin Imlach, giving West Indies their first breakthrough.
At 58/1, India innings was steady, Sai Sudharsan joined Jaiswal at the crease. The pair batted with remarkable composure, stitching together a crucial second-wicket stand that frustrated the West Indian bowlers for much of the afternoon session. He rotated the strike well and provided solid support to Jaiswal, ensuring India remained in complete control.
The partnership between Jaiswal and Sudharsan added 193 runs, putting India in a dominant position before Warrican once again provided the breakthrough. Sudharsan was trapped LBW after missing a fuller delivery that straightened just enough to hit the pads. His dismissal ended a fine innings, but by then, India had already crossed the 250-run mark
Jomel Warrican was the only bowler who looked threatening, picking up both wickets of Rahul and Sudharsan. His figures read 2/60 in 20 overs. Jayden Seales bowled with good rhythm but couldn’t find any breakthroughs, finishing the day with 16 overs.
At stumps on Day 1, India stood tall at 318/2 in 90 overs with Jaiswal unbeaten on 173 and Gill on 20, as the team prepared to continue their dominance on Day 2.
